Pathing the Way for Smart Cities through Lamppost

Lamppost will no longer be used just for lighting the streets. The ubiquitous urban fixture has found its new lease of life in smart cities.

The idea of tapping into lampposts is proven to be a sustainable use case and serves as the best entry point to any smart city deployment.

Why Lampposts?

– Lampposts are tall and already widely deployed, which means they can provide good aerial coverage for communications devices. The communications network canopy established over the streets, covering almost the entire cities can be used as a form of connectivity for sensors and devices required for smart city applications.

Power is available, with the opportunity to increase capacity if the luminaires are converted to LEDs.

– Lampposts are the single source of truth. With cameras and sensors mounted on lampposts, data including traffic flow, parking lots availability, crowd behaviour, environmental conditions (rainfall, temperature, humidity, air quality, flood, snow level), etc., can be harnessed for planning and implementation of services to improve liveability and safety in the city.

– Lampposts are readily accessible which allows for information dissemination through attached displays.

The use of lampposts for other services such as an infrastructure for EV charging, autonomous vehicle guidance, distress button emergency response, public warning, etc. and many other use cases are for us to explore.

With the new lease of life given to lampposts, the city will never be the same again.
