Marlink is the pioneer in business-critical IT, communication and digital solutions, and the world’s leading maritime provider of satellite communications and end-to-end managed connectivity*.
Cruise ships are accommodating more guests and crew members than ever before, with the vessels needing reliable technology and able to support high bandwidth demands. Guests want the freedom to share and upload their travel memories online, and crew members want to stay connected with their families and friends on the mainland. The maiden voyages of MSC Cruises’ next-generation cruise ships predicted spikes in demand for the inaugural sailing of the MSC Meraviglia and MSC Seaside. It was vital to be able to provide this convenience for more than 4500 guests on board, allowing them the opportunity to connect and share their first-hand experiences and stories on social media in real time.
The global multi-band iDirect Sealink network from Marlink is powered by Intelsat’s EpicNG HTS satellite network and cutting-edge iDirect 9350 modems; the modems provide automatic global satellite acquisition, dynamic bandwidth allocation and bandwidth sharing for cost-efficient operations.
Such developments have allowed Marlink to achieve record-breaking internet speeds: 300 Mbps on MSC Meraviglia and 580 Mbps on MSC Seaside. As a result, the MSC Meraviglia was named ‘Ship of the Year’ by Marine Electronics & Communications (MEC) for breaking the bandwidth-at-sea record.
